-I got fish eye-
I wrote this poem like in 9th grade. I got an email from a magazine that it might get published this coming spring.

Brown faces looking at me
I ask my self what do I see
Working in rows of green trees trying to make ends meat
In order to maintain the family tree
I never knew JC was watching over me, while I picked apples with a man in wrinkled skin watching me do the right thing
Going from tree to tree I never knew what I would be, working with teens much unlike me
Tattooed tears over my peers
Lord please part the sea so I can take your people out from here
Sirens of the night who would it be
One of the “G’s” or just another lonely person off the street
When shall this pain come to end so I can be in my mothers arms again
Oh lord help me to understand the things that I see
Brown faces looking at me

Things about community and decipleship. I been thinking about the program i'm going to be leading in Washington.

The Fellowship of the Believers-Acts 2:42-47
42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Mathew 28:19-20
19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Luke 4:18
18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
      because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,

The Vine and the Branches John 15
1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

9“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit–fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other.

1 Thessalonians 2:8
8We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.
Christian got the Golden Pineapple Award @ Islands for most improved boy at Allendale Elementary. It was good, we both had a thick and juicy bacon cheese with some crispy fries and a coca cola. Man did this guy had questions. I guess he had never been to a restaurant where you get seated and wait on. Or some what of a formal place. He was wondering how we were suppose to get our food. And where we were suppose to take our plates after we were done. It was quite a learning experience for the both of us. It was nice having the manager come out and greet us and congragulate (spll?) Chris for his achievement. The waitress was very nice and kind as well. Too bad for Christian's conversational skills. He kept on looking at his coloring page while the manager and waitress paid him respect. After they left I talked to him about looking people in the eyes when they were talking to him. And shared that its a sign of being respectful. It was good.
I remember my time at Jubilee we got a lot of social training apart from our academics and athelitics. We were taught how to behave at a formal dinner, the different ways to shake hands. How to set a table for dinner, and the different use of silverware. A lot of stuff like that.

A lot of what I do with the guys i'm mentoring is teaching them to be kind and gentle.
The rain is gone at least for now and thats a good thing. I was tired of being mojado all the time (joke). I'm over in La Cañada waiting for one of my homies so we can do some planning and catch up. I like this place, its called Higley's and its own by a young woman. Having a business is good, if you can manage it well. I was remembering some youtheses from el Jarambee. We gave them a box with cups one time. And they stood on the corner of Howard and Navarro stopping cars and asking them if they wanted to buy a cup. That was a trip. I'll be seeing one of those guys in April. He is up in WA and i'm going up there in April for spring break and taking some of my guys with me.

Today what the heck i'm I going to do? Hmmm....well right after this we are having our afterschool program, which i'm thinking about showing a movie like last friday since the kids get fridays free.

I pray that you will understand the words of Jesus, “Love one another as I have loved you.” Ask yourself “How has he loved me? Do I really love others in the same way?” Unless this love is among us, we can kill ourselves with work and it will only be work, not love. Work without love is slavery.

Madre Teresa
So the reaction wasn't bad after i told them i would be leaving in June. There was like 2 minutes of silence then Rigo spoke up about how he felt by saying, " Sergio right before you leave, i'm going to destroy the freeway so you can't leave. And everyone else was pretty bummed. After a little while they started asking me questions. Why am I leaving to go there? What am I going to do? stuff like that. So, I told them again I felt God closing the doors down here for me and opening doors for me up there. And I mentioned the fact that my parents are up there and I want to spend time with my parents now. And not regret not doing it later. It was good. After we got through all of that and the spring break trip we went into bible study. Look at the story of el Lazaro. It was good, not much discussion from them.
Afterwards Rigo usherd us into prayer. And very excited told us that he prayed on Sunday at church, and he was like, "Sergio, I prayed on sunday, and you taught me how to pray," I was like yes!!!!!!score, fruit. So, it was good. They all prayed for each other and me. And asked God to give me Wisdom to follow Him and to obey Him. It was good. The best part is hearing them go into confession, and asking God for forgiveness. It was good.

After the study we went to wendys for those wonderful $1 junior bacon cheese deluxe and some fries.

Okay busy day. Gotta get studying. Peace.

I think I little too much half and half in my Americano. My stomach is in a bit of stress.
A few minutes ago I got done with my reading and note taking for my course in Logic. Good stuff. And the rain continues. I'm at Higley's in La Cañada listening to The Smiths and getting ready to go home and get some rest. Maybe interact with the roomies a little if they are still up. Nothing much going on.

I'm telling the boys i'm mentoring that i'm moving to WA tomorrow or at least that is the plan. Last time I was going to tell them not all of them were here for bible study. I've been pray and asking God to let me know if He wants me to take the boys to WA during spring break. Some one I know already agreed to pay for the food for the trip. It would be great if I don't have to raise money for a rental car. And it would be awesome if someone I now would be willing to switch cars with me for that week of April. It would be great to take a big truck, like a king cab, Ram model, with a rack on it, preferly a black rack....does any one know any body????huh?

It rained on our parade...I volunteered to go stand at a booth Harambee had for the black history month but as you southern californianos know is not quite the best condition for a parade. So, am at home thinking about reading and cleaning. I had breakfast with my housemates today which was good, pancakes and cheesy eggs. Might go watch a movie with them later on, not exactly sure which one, Lone mentioned she wanted to see a something date. Not really in a mood for romance movie but its about spending time.

Lastnight was fun though. Went and had dinner with a small group a friend of mine started a few weeks ago. We had dinner at el cholo (see below). That was fun although you really couldn't have a conversation because it was so loud.

After dinner we split and people went their separate ways. It was a good night, hung out in downtown alhambra. The original plan was to go dancing but it didn't quite work out like that. After hanging out we went to the garden cafe, a chinese cafe that is open until 4am in the morning. Good stuff.

The Killers "Hot Fuss" number 9 has her name in it.

Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter
your heart. When
you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning
light. Give thanks
for your life and strength. Give thanks for your food and
for the joy of
living. And if perchance you see no reason for giving
thanks, rest assured
the fault is in yourself.

Pedro Sanchez's speech for class president:
"Hello! I don't have much to say but i think it would be good to have some holy santos back to the high school. To guard the hallway and to bring us good luck. El santo niño de atocha is a good one. My tia Concha has seen him and we have a great ...faith schedule lined up, and I would like to see some of that....and if you vote for me, all of your wildest dreams will come true" (Napoleon Dynamite)

I can't say how many times i've seen this movie. Its really funny. The sweetest is when Napoleon busts out with his dance to help his friend Pedro win the election.
'Y sigue la mula andando'...still looking for work. I got a called from Jack en el Crack. They called and said be here 6pm so I was like orale. Got there at 5:45pm and waited. At 6pm the manager sent someone out to tell me she would be out in a few secons. So, I waited until 6:13 or so, no one came out. A couple minutes later someone came out telling me to please give the manager 5 more minutes she was in a meeting in the back. So, I waited 10 more before deciding to leave. I figured if they really need to hire they would call me to come back for another interview. All that to say still looking. Waiting for 3 more places to maybe call.

So right now i'm at home doing some work and getting ready for the afterschool program. Listening to the guys up stairs listen to Chalino Sanchez as they keep on renewing the house.

This made my day today:

Hi my name is Veronica and I came across your blog and I thought it was very interesting.
It just amazes me that even thought you are  illegal here in the US you try your best to pursue a better education and not let that “problem” stop you. Good for you! You wouldn’t  believe how many people that have “papeles” have every opportunity to do everything in this country, but  don’t realize it. I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that I admire you!

Best of luck finding a job!!

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

Job hunt continues and the more exciting it gets. I've been applying at different places mainly restaurant work. Which is the easiest to get if you are in the position that am in. Some of you who know me personally know what I mean. At the moment i'm applying in different places as I wait for people to maybe call me. This morning I went and applied at jack 'n crack. Thats what the kids call it around here. I went to apply there 1. becuaes one of the moms of the kids I tutor said I should, she works there. 2. One of the guys in my bible study said I should go ahead and do it.
I looked on the Lake avenue helping hand and called a couple places that were hiring. One is assiting the elderly and the other is 'Wolfe Burgers' on Lake.
Being mojado is a hard thing when it comes to finding work but its good at the same time. I like work and encourage it. Work is work my dad would say.

I got a job offer through one of the local churches that has an out reach ministry with the day laborers. This job would ideal for me. I come from a migrant family and know how to talk to my people and at the same time be a bridge between God and them. The job offered free rent, $1000 a month and a great ministry team to work with. One problem only, soy ilegal. But oh well. The hunt continues.

Mexico's ex-president is Yale's current director of globalization studies at the school.

Yale is defending him as he is being accused of starting several violent guerillas to fight agains the Zapatista Army For National Liberation. The ex president is being accused of 123 murders, 37 cases disapearences (spll?) and forcing 13 thousand poeple out of their homes during his reign as Mexicos president. This dude made a good move on leaving Mexico. I'm sure he would of ended up dead. There is a lot of people in Mexico that don't like him.

Feliz Dia Del Amor Y La Amistad everybody....

Little Mathew from our afterschool program made my day when he came up to me and handed me a valentines day card. This was nice. I miss my elementary years, when I would come home with a little paper bag made during art class. So, when it was valentines day we could used so the classmates can deposit their cards for us. Good times. I think I still have some stored up at my moms house.

A friend of mine came to visit me today. He goes to school in Lancaster. It was good to see im and catch up. We were remembering our glory days of high school football during the afterschool program. We played some football with the kids at Harambee before heading out to Eastlos for dinner at El Tepeyac. But we didn't make to the restaurant. We stopped at the bank of america that is on Cesar Chavez to get some cash but we ended up eating on the side of the street. The food was good. I can't remember the name of the cross street. But if you know where that bank of america is you know what i'm talking about. Its not too far for Evergreen. After eating we walked up and down that shopping area flirting with the young girls that would try to get us to come in to their shops. Just a couple of vatos locos chillin' on the boulevard.

Here are some photos. Go get some food there.

The lady got excited when I told her I was going to give here some publicity. If you go get some quesadillas de chicharron, they are the bomb. But make sure you get them fried. She makes the tortillas hand made. Just make sure she frieds them.

Thats my friend Rolando all the way in the back holding the cup.

On our way leaving Eastlos we saw this on one of the buildings.

Pepper is weird...I mean by the way she sleeps. All four in the air.
She is quite the model though when it comes to taking pictures of her.

On Saturday night I went to a church in North Hollywood to accompany a friend to a concert. This is his niece Tonya, isn't she a cutie.

Well, i'm out for the night. Need to rest for the job hunt tomorrow.
Listening to Morrissey's Bona Drag. Waiting for the coffee to brew before I drive up to Sun Valley.
A friend asked me to drop him off up there, he is in a shoot for the show Vegas and i'm taking the opportunity to pick up some coffee a friend sent me from Costa Rica. Her sister has it and all I need to do is go get it. Nothing planned going on except tutoring and bible study later on tonight.

I'm hearing Lone and Erik give tony a bath. Both of them work for our school next door, and appearntly Tony came to school with urine on this pants. Its sad how some parents really don't watch after their kids. And I can't help to wonder what it is. Is it parenting skills that they need or something else. I feel for those kids.

At home eating dinner with good 'ol Chris and watching los Grammys, being blown away by Alicia and U2's performance.
My nomination for best rock album goes to The Killers, too bad they didn't get it. I guess Green Day is worthy. They come along way since Dookie, They were on the cover of Rolling Stone this week, talking about the new album and how they want to be as big as U2, yeeeeah, good luck buddy. But I don't want to hate. So hat tip to you Mr. Billy Joel Armstrong for your rock opera, its a good album.

For the past so many years I've been in the US of A i've gotten my penecillin medicine in TJ, just because its cheap and I can't afford to go to the doctor every time my throat gets really bad, becuase I know what they are going to prescribed. So, tis really easy to buy the medicine without a prescription. Well, Rolling Stone released an article how a lot of Americans go across the border to pic up meds. This is potentially dangerous. I just know our government is going to push towards regulating that more tightly making it harder for poeple like me who can't afford medical insurance, at least I don't get sick that often.

Well thats all for today. I want it to write about a friends birthday celebration but i'm too lazy to do it. So, instead if you want to read about click here. I do have to say if you like 80's music, singing to bands like The Smiths, Blondie and Metro, this is the spot for you.
So I went submit an application for employment at a local community grocery store. The owner told me it would problably be a10 days before I hear anything from him. So, now its a waiting game.
In the next few days i'm going to be submitting applications in different places. All I need to make is $500 a month. If I get a job that pays at least that I would be a major blessing to me. So, its all a matter of prayer now.
Walla Walla is on the map.. if you get Latina magazine or would like to buy the March issue (pg. 36). There is an article of the area I am from up in Washington and where I'm moving to come June. Check it out.

Quick Update....just in case you missed it.

Greetings from Pasadena, this is a quick update and prayer
request.

I pray you are doing well. Things are going well on my
end. Bible study with the boys is coming along nicely. Last
week I had one of the boys lead the bible study. I’m planning on having each of them
teach a lesson. When we study, we first pray about the
reading, then read and finally go into a discussion about it.
The adulterous woman in John 8 was the most recent story we read.
The boys learned that it's not our job to
judge, but to forgive and be merciful towards others. We
had a good conversation about the meaning of grace and how
the amount of good deeds does not matter; our salvation
depends solely on God's grace. It was good.

Rigo will be teaching the next bible study. The idea
behind having the boys take lead in teaching is to empower them
in the word, as well as sharpen their bible teaching
skills. I want them to be able to look at scripture, read it and
come up with application questions. Please keep us in
prayer as we go through this. This coming week I’m going to telling them that I will be moving to Washington. My prayer is that they will be able to commission me as I make the move.

This past month, I sat down to balance out my finances. It
was then that I realized my need for a part-time job
in order to pay for my basic necessities and a credit card
debt. I'd also like to be able to save a little for the
move back home. Though I will move into my parent's home, I
don't want to be broke or burden them while I job search in
the Tri-cities. However, in order to fit everything in my
schedule, I had to step down as the Retreat House Manager;
which in turn, means having to pay rent ($200 a month); but
as I mentioned with a new job, I should still make it. Your
prayers in my job-hunting would be appreciated.

Here is the low down on the spring break road trip which,
God willing, we will be able to come up with the funding.
The total cost should be about $720: $120 for food, $250
for gas, and $350 for car rental. My prayer is for God to
provide a car through someone in our community. This would
decrease the cost of the trip significantly. As a group we
are having a few car washes in March to help with the
expense.

Those are the news briefs for the moment. Please continue
to pray for my journey in life.

Tony and Jayme. Missionary friends in Belize.

How do you move poeple from:
• Anxious to Committed?
•Fearful to Courageous?
•Lonely to Connected?
•Needy to Fruitful?
•Confused to Focused?
•Protective to Productive?

Things i'm looking and reading about. In thinking about this I'm thinking about the boys I mentor. I have an understanding with them. I'm their friend but at the same time I'm their mentor and they know this. They know that if I get on their case about something is part of me helping them move forward and be productive. Little things such as not littering or getting their tasks done like doing their homework finishing their book report. They know what i'm doing is not for myself but for their own benefit. I don't experience the things they do nor they experience the things I do. But just like them I come from the same background and have an understanding of what their family life is like. Their situation at school, their relationship with each other and their families.

This is very different than having a deciple. Becuase they are not going to take over what I do once I leave. Although I try to spend a high quantity and high quality time with them as if they were going to. But I try to live my life as close to them as possible. Taking them with me every where I go. Shopping, church, work, public speaking, near by inner city work, and even receartional time with my friends.

Just things i'm thinking about.

Orale! I should change my name to Perlo, Perlo Castañeda.

Pearl
! You are most like A Pearl !
Independant, indifferent - and powerful. You tend
to be alone a lot
but you like that. You are rare, and amazingly
strong. A good head
on your shoulders and very practical minded. You're
like a pearl
because you're smooth, cool and have that hard
exterior.
People long to have your confidence, and you're the
one people follow and admire.
Congratulations ... you're the confident cool gem
that people most want to be like.

Like I don't have nothing else to do.

Season = Summer
You're Most Like The Season Summer ...

Whoa.... Passionate eh ?? Typically you're a fiery,
zesty dominant person. As the hottest season,
you certainly ooze Sex appeal. You have
confidence which draws people to you, and you
have the makings of a good leader.
However sometimes your exterior is stronger then
you are and so you scare people off before they
can get close.

Well done... You're the most memorable of seasons
:)

Well I've never thought of my self as sexyoso.
Cold morning today. It reminded me of the cold mornings I spent visiting my grandpa in the sierras back in the old country. And I say old as a figure of speech because last time I went to Mexico with Rebecca, Rudy, Kafi and little Sam everything was new to me.
Spending time in my state with family was unrealistic. Mexico City still holds the record for me in cities I would love to explore.

I read John 9 this morning as part of my morning devotions.
No set plan for today, I was encouraged by something I read talking about if you want to know Jesus keep waking with Him. I find this quite right. If you want to know a person keep hanging out with them.

Tonight I have community dinner and bible study.

God is good, I'm excited about what is going to do in my life and I can't hardly wait to see His plan develop with every step I take in my life. Yesterday was good, I spent the entire day cleaning the house until 6pm. So we have a clean living room and a clean kitchen.
My evening I spent part of it with some friends at a bilingual small group from The Fusion. It was good, I guess eventhough we havent really set exactly what we are going go be really doing. I think at the moment we are getting acquainted with each other. At least lastnight it wasn't as awcquard (spll?) for me as the previous meeting. Which was all women. A friend from my monday night bible study showed up last night. He is a professor at Azusa Pacific University and has great insight into the old testament. My thought for the group is to learn about the old testament. Maybe study Joshua.

After the group Rocio, Eliel and i headed over to Zona Rosa here in Pasadena to grab some coffee. For those of you who don't know. It is the best café house in Pasadena located on El Molino not too far from the Leamle's Theater (spll?) check them out on the web @ : http://www.zonarosacaffe.com

Today, well is Super Bowl Sunday. I'm going to spend some time at the Tiptons whom are watching the super bowl on the big screen. And also going over to Derek for like 10mins to get some ribs (he called a couple minutes ago) I also gotta stop by Tims house who is also having some poeple over for El Super Bol.

At six Ramiro and fam are coming over to join me, a Peruvian family, and maybe Kelvin and his family for dinner. Chicken steaks and sopa de arroz. Its on. Go Patriots.

Saturday, February 05, 2005

Waking up to people banging on the wall that is next to my room, is not my ideal wake up call. I rather be woken up with tender kisses. But defenitly not from the guys working on our house, or any other guy. This morning was good. I cleaned the entire kitchen and living room area. Dusted the couches and mopped our floors. Now i'm resting thinking about my meeting with the bilingual group from the church I've been attending.
Looking at getting a job. A part time to bring a few extra bucks, get ahead on paying the bills and have a little extra for a rainy day. While I was at the local mini market the carnicero told me, while holding a conversation about work, he needed some help. He encouraged me to get an application for employement and not to worry about "paperwork". Sounds good to me. I can see myself wearing a white apron all stained with blood from handling the meat. Talk to the local clientele. Work is work que no?
I think I have a pretty good chance at getting hired. Here is my resume, what do you guys think?:

'Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar", is an old Spanish saying. And today mi y three of mis vatos like wild chiapas insurgents took to the mountains. But not before having a two for two at Macdanos. It was good time spent with my guys. It was kind of a downer that only two from my bible study got to go. While we were at Mcd's we ran into Jay, one of the boys who lives down the street from me. I asked him if he wanted to come, and my guys were encouraging him but he was busy doing something with his ma'. So it was just the four of us desperados for the hike.

Rigo, Chris and Chubila

You gotta jump!!

We want to try and stay out of the water Rigo.

Chubila waiting patiently for the rest of the troop..

Hurry Rigo and quit playing around...

Careful not to tip over guys, you might end up in the water.

Pepper had a good time running wild and jumping from rock to rock.

The water fall not too far up ahead.

I'm thankful for the young man that was out there, and was willing to take a photo of us.

Rigo, after a long walk was pretty much all tired out.

Lluvia this one is for you. It was your signature on it.
